Reading Update

If you know me, you’ll know that reading books is something that I haven’t really been doing most of my life. Through a lot of… circumstances… It has never quite been my main venue for enjoyment. But here’s a little history of where I came from and where I’m at today.

Early Readings

The first time I actually read a book AND enjoyed it, was when a 3rd or 4th grade (I don’t remember, sorry Mrs. Badrack and Mrs. Mulkey) teacher recommended a book for me to read based on my interests and what they figured a boy my age would like. I believe it was “A Boy at WAR” by Harry Mazer. This was a historical fiction story about some kid in Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor attack. I’ll be honest, the only thing that stuck out to me was a passage where the author describes the kid trying to pull a man from the water and having his skin slough off (first time I ever read that word) while pulling him up. This probably should have been a red flag, and now I’m a huge fan of horror, go figure.

After this, I think “Holes” by Louis Sachar was the only other one I enjoyed. From then it was just things I was forced to read through school, and I hated pretty much every minute of it.

Christmas 2024

This was around when I finally got medicated for ADHD, and found a book series called Dungeon Crawler Carl. I sat down after deciding I’d read it, and also wake up earlier in the morning so I could have the time, and I’ll say, I’ve never enjoyed reading, but good god I ran through all the stuff Matt Dinniman put out for DCC. Getting to the end of book 7 was such a strange feeling for me. Never had I had to wait for an author to write more, and I get it now, it’s a shitty feeling haha.

Now

I’ve started in on the wonderful world that is Disc World from Terry Pratchett. Starting out with “Guards! Guards!” which was interesting, solely from the standpoint of, “oh, other people have distinct writing styles, this is weeeeiiiirrrddddd”. I’ve moved on to “Mort”, which, is seemingly on brand for my tastes as it follows Death’s apprentice.

I’ll continue this reading journey I think. Who knows, maybe I’ll get too focused on it and start writing something myself.
